Interventions

Trial group 1:After the operation, lidocaine (2 mg/kg) was instilled into both nostrils.
Trial group 2:After the operation, dexmedetomidine (2 µg/kg) was instilled into both nostrils.
Control group:After the operation, the same volume of normal saline was instilled into both nostrils.

3 Years to 12 Years

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Age range: 3–12 years old 2. ASA classification: Grade I–II 3. Elective adenoidectomy with or without tonsillectomy

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Patient's family refuses to sign consent form; 2. Known allergy to lidocaine or dexmedetomidine; 3. Severe cardiopulmonary disease (uncorrected congenital heart disease, primary or secondary pulmonary hypertension, neoplastic or structural lung disease, history of asthma); 4. Severe hepatic or renal impairment; 5. Coagulopathy; 6. Severe upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) where anaesthetist advises postponing surgery. 7. BMI > 30 kg/m².
