Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Cross-sectional Cohort Study: A total of 100 overweight/obese patients from the Gastrointestinal Surgery and Endocrinology departments of the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University were included. Inclusion criteria: 1. Age >16 years; 2. BMI >=24.0 kg/m²; 3. Completed brain imaging and assessments for food addiction and mood/depressive disorders; 4. Right-handed. Community-recruited control group, 100 cases: 1. Age >16 years; 2. 18.5 kg/m² 32.5 kg/m² with at least two obesity-related organic comorbidities (such as obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, type 2 diabetes, metabolic liver disease, hypertension, dyslipidemia, weight-related joint disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and severe psychological disorders), or BMI >37.5 kg/m² with at least one obesity-related organic comorbidity, and having completed bariatric surgery; 2. Complete brain imaging as well as food addiction and mood/depressive disorder assessments both before surgery and one year after surgery; 3. Age over 16 years; 4. Good compliance. A total of 50 patients from the Endocrinology department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University who achieved effective weight loss through conservative medical treatment before and after treatment were included. Inclusion criteria: 1. Pre-treatment BMI >=24.0 kg/m²; 2. Completed brain imaging and assessments for food addiction and mood/depressive disorders; 3. Right-handed; 4. Effective weight loss after medical treatment, reaching 18.5 kg/m² <= BMI <24 kg/m².

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Cross-sectional cohort study: 1. A history of mental and/or neurological disorders, including bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and severe depression (with suicidal ideation or psychiatric hospitalization in the past 12 months); 2. A history of taking any medications that may affect the central nervous system; 3. Inability to provide informed consent, or contraindications for MRI (such as pregnancy or claustrophobia). Longitudinal cohort study: 1. A history of mental and/or neurological disorders before bariatric surgery, including bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and severe depression (with suicidal ideation or psychiatric hospitalization in the past 12 months); 2. A history of previous gastrointestinal surgery and/or inflammatory bowel disease, or organ dysfunction; 3. A history of taking any medications that may affect the central nervous system; 4. Inability to provide informed consent, or contraindications for MRI (such as pregnancy or claustrophobia).
