Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: (1) report of spontaneous pain or pain on movements in the TMJ area for more than 3 months; (2) pain on palpation of the lateral pole or in a circular movement around the lateral pole of the TMJ on the same side. Persons with coarse crepitation were excluded, but fine crepitation and clicks were allowed.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: (1) history of myalgia or myofascial pain or treatment of TMD during the past 3 months; (2) use of current medications (antidepressants, analgesics or drugs with central nervous system action) within the last month; (3) self-reports of severe systemic diseases or mental disorders.
