Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: Inclusion criteria for PND patients: 1. diagnosis of MDD by a psychiatrist based on the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-V (SCID-I); 2. first episode and untreated; 3. clustered depression self-rating scale score (SDS) >= 53; 4. Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) score >= 13 (maternal only); 5. right-handed with normal intelligence, vision and hearing; 6. conscious and able to understand the purpose of treatment, procedures and associated risks. Normal maternal inclusion criteria: the same as for PND patients except for criteria 1-4 above. Inclusion criteria for non-pregnant female patients with depressive disorder: same as those for PND patients except for item 4. Inclusion criteria for normal non-pregnant women: women with no history of pregnancy or childbirth, except for 1-4 above.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: Exclusion criteria for patients with PND: 1. metal or electronic devices in the brain (including cochlear implants, implanted brain stimulators or electrodes, aneurysm clips, etc.), electronic cochlear implants, other serious physical diseases; 2. He/she and his/her first-degree relatives have neurological diseases that affect brain function and related medical history; 3. having taken psychotropic drugs in the last three months and having used analgesic drugs within one week; 4. history of late preterm labour with known obstetric complications including: gestational hypertension or diabetes mellitus or abnormal prenatal testing; 5. presence of known abnormalities in the foetus; 6. presence of psychiatric illness other than PND. Normal maternal exclusion criteria: Exclusion criteria 1 to 5 are the same as for patients with PND and pregnant women with any psychiatric disorder that meets the DSM-V diagnostic criteria. Exclusion criteria for non-pregnant female patients with depressive disorder: exclusion criteria 1 to 3, previous history of pregnancy and childbirth, and the presence of a psychiatric disorder other than MDD. Exclusion criteria for non-pregnant normal females; exclusion criteria 1 to 3 are the same as for patients with PND and any mental disorder that meets the DSM-V diagnostic criteria.
