Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: 1. elderly patients >= 60 years of age; 2. proposed to undergo elective non-cardiac surgery under general anaesthesia; 3. expected duration of surgery >= 1 hour; 4. American Society of Anaesthesiologists (ASA) classification of II-III; 5. signed informed consent by the patient or his/her legal representative.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: 1. preexisting preoperative dementia, mental illness, or severe cognitive impairment; 2. preoperative presence of severe hearing or speech impairment that prevents effective communication with the researcher for delirium assessment; 3. emergency surgery, neurosurgery or cardiac surgery; 4. according to the preoperative plan, the patient will be transferred directly from the operating theatre to the intensive care unit (ICU) after the operation, which prevents standardised postoperative follow-up in the general ward; 5. the duration of anaesthesia is <60 minutes; 6. suffering from severe hepatic insufficiency or severe renal failure.
