Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Septic patients: 1. Voluntarily sign an informed consent form; 2. Visit Southern University of Science and Technology's Southern Hospital from January 2022 to January 2025; 3. Diagnosed as septic patients according to the 'International Consensus on Definitions for Sepsis and Septic Shock, 3rd Edition'; Non-septic bacterial infection patients: 1. Voluntarily sign an informed consent form; 2. Visit Southern University of Science and Technology's Southern Hospital from January 2022 to January 2025; 3. Diagnosed as bacterial infection patients based on laboratory tests that are positive for bacterial or fungal infection but non-septic; ICU non-septic and infected patients: 1. Voluntarily sign an informed consent form; 2. Patients admitted to the ICU for non-infectious reasons (such as trauma, acute myocardial infarction, stroke, etc.) from January 2022 to January 2025; 3. No clinical manifestations of sepsis or bacterial infection; Healthy controls: 1. Voluntarily sign an informed consent form; 2. Visit Southern University of Science and Technology's Southern Hospital from January 2022 to January 2025; 3. Health check-ups show normal results in blood tests, liver function, kidney function and other examinations, with no underlying diseases.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Patients with colorectal cancer, other serious cardiovascular diseases, neurological disorders, severe brain injuries, and those who have undergone cardiovascular and gastrointestinal surgeries; 2. Individuals over 60 years old need to rule out malignant tumors, acute myocardial infarction, sequelae of stroke, coronary artery bypass surgery, benign brain tumors, bilateral deafness at specific ages, paralysis, bilateral blindness at specific ages, heart valve surgery, severe brain injuries, third-degree burns, loss of language ability, aortic surgery, myasthenia gravis, severe rheumatoid arthritis, and other diseases.
