Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 56 elderly patients (age 60-80) scheduled for PKP were recruited for this study. The inclusion criteria were as follows: (1) patients classified as American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) status III to IV; (2) patients with a single-level OVCF; (3) patients with an OVCF at the L1 to L5 level; and (4) patients whose vertebral compression caused by OVCF required surgical intervention, and pain was over 5, measured by visual analogy score (VAS).

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: (1) patients with spinal cord or nerve root compression; (2) patients with mental disabilities, lack of cooperation or no pain; (3) OVCF was induced by secondary osteoporosis, vertebral metastatic cancer or osteomyelitis; (4) patients using the anticoagulants or dysfunction of coagulation, (5) patients with an allergy to local anesthetics (lidocaine or ropivacaine).
