Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: Inclusion criteria for PND patients: 1. Meeting the diagnostic criteria for unipolar depression in the *Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Edition* (DSM-IV) and the *Chinese Classification and Diagnostic Criteria of Mental Disorders, 3rd Edition* (CCMD-3); 2. First onset and without treatment; 3. Score of Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) = 15; 4. Score of Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) = 13 (only for parturients); 5. Right-handed, with normal intelligence, vision and hearing. Inclusion criteria for normal pregnant and postpartum women: The same as those for PND patients, except for the above items 1-4. Inclusion criteria for non-perinatal normal female controls: Female subjects without a history of pregnancy or childbirth, except for the above items 1-4. Criteria for grouping PND patients by natural outcome: The natural development outcomes of patients' conditions are divided into three groups: (1) "Self-limited type", defined as PND symptoms starting to recover 3 months after childbirth and fully recovering within 12 months after childbirth; (2) "Partially improved type", with alleviated PND symptoms and a disease course exceeding 12 months after childbirth; (3) "Chronic severe type", with PND symptoms showing no alleviation or even aggravation compared with those at the time of diagnosis, and a disease course exceeding 12 months.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: Exclusion criteria for PND patients: 1. Having metal implants in the body, which makes them unsuitable for MRI scanning; 2. Having a history of neurological diseases affecting brain function or related medical history in themselves or their first-degree relatives; 3. Having taken psychiatric drugs in the past three months or analgesic drugs within one week; 4. Having other mental illnesses besides PND. Exclusion criteria for normal pregnant and postpartum women: The first to third exclusion criteria are the same as those for PND patients, and pregnant and postpartum women who meet the diagnostic criteria for any mental disorder in DSM-5. Exclusion criteria for non-perinatal normal female controls: The first to third exclusion criteria are the same as those for PND patients, and those who meet the diagnostic criteria for any mental disorder in DSM-5.
