Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Hepatic encephalopathy group inclusion criteria: 1. Patients with clinical and radiological evidence of liver cirrhosis with portal hypertension; 2. Hepatic encephalopathy graded 0–2 according to the West Haven criteria; 3. age between 18 and 75 years. Healthy control group inclusion criteria: No systemic diseases were present, including hypertension, diabetes, or hepatic and renal disorders etc.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Hepatic encephalopathy group exclusion criteria: 1. Alcohol consumption within the past 6 months; 2. use of psychoactive medications (such as antidepressants, neuroleptics, or benzodiazepines); 3. contraindications to MRI; 4. inability to cooperate due to severe cardiopulmonary disease; 5. age 75 years; 6. presence of hepatic malignancy or rapidly progressive liver failure; 7. Hepatic encephalopathy graded 3–4 according to the West Haven criteria. Healthy control group exclusion criteria: (1) Patients with a history of syncope, epilepsy, or related neurological conditions; (2) Patients with severe psychiatric disorders or significant neurological diseases; (3) Pregnant or lactating women; (4) Patients with known hypersensitivity to MRI magnetic fields; (5) Patients with implanted metallic devices, such as pacemakers, cochlear implants, or metal dental prostheses.
