Interventions

Combined exercise and cognitive intervention group:Participants first underwent a one-hour cognitive intervention, followed by a one-hour cognitive intervention
Exercise intervention group:Participants underwent a one-hour exercise intervention.
Cognitive intervention group:Participants underwent a one-hour cognitive intervention.
Control group:"Participants maintained their usual lifestyle habits and participated in three health-education sessions.

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: (1) Age 65 -95 years older; (2) Residing within a reasonable commuting distance of the Kunshan Day Care Centre; (3) Normal cognitive function, with MMSE scores similar to those in Study 1: This study uses the widely accepted and used education-based MMSE cutoff points in China to define cognitive impairment, i.e., illiterate individuals score below 18 points, less than 21 points for those with 1–6 years of education, and less than 25 points for those with more than 6 years of education; (4) voluntarily signed an informed consent form; (5) able to live independently; (6) able to participate in moderate-intensity physical activities and walk without assistive devices.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: (1) Diagnosed with any type of CI; (2) Not engaging in regular exercise (defined as exercising three or more times per week, with each session lasting >20 minutes); (3) Having participated in any cognitive training programme within the past six months; (4) Unable to participate in training due to mobility issues or orthopaedic conditions; (5) Having been diagnosed with a major illness within the past three months that prevents participation in moderate-intensity exercise, such as myocardial infarction, heart surgery, or stroke; (6) other conditions affecting exercise intervention, such as congestive heart failure, angina pectoris, severe arrhythmia, or blood pressure exceeding 160/100 mm Hg (Poglitsch et al., 2021); (7) mental disorders, such as substance use disorder, major depressive disorder, or post-traumatic stress disorder; (8) currently undergoing chemotherapy; (9) impaired hearing or vision, unable to complete the questionnaire; (10) unable to care for oneself; (11) history of use or abuse of psychoactive substances (e.g., sedatives, antidepressants).
