Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Age > 18 years; 2. Patients admitted to the general ICU of the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine due to acute respiratory failure; 3. Expected duration of mechanical ventilation > 48 hours; 4. Obtain approval from the attending physician; 5. Informed consent was obtained from the patient or his/her immediate family member.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Hospitalized or have a history of hospitalization within one month prior to recruitment; 2. History of cardiovascular or cerebrovascular events within the past 12 months; 3. pregnant; 4. Patients with advanced cancer or advanced disease; 5. Active neurological or muscular disease; 6. Patients with cerebral coma, brain death, or status epilepticus; 7. Serious mental health problems (such as depression with psychotic features, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia); 8. Patients receiving neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs).
