Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1) Age >=18; 2) Right-handed; 3) National athlete classification >= first-class level (based on standards issued by the General Administration of Sport of China49, with detailed classification criteria provided in Supplementary File 2), with >=9 years of specialized swimming stroke training; 4) Normal or corrected-to-normal vision and hearing; 5) No signs of cognitive impairment (Mini-Mental State Examination [MMSE] score >= 27); 6) No depressive symptoms (Beck Depression Inventory-II [BDI-II] score <= 13).

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1) History of neurological or psychiatric disorders (e.g., epilepsy, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, major depression); 2) History of brain or head trauma; 3) Current or recent use in the last 4 weeks of medications that affect central nervous system or autonomic function (e.g., beta-blockers, antidepressants, etc.); 4) History of regular or occasional smoking and alcohol consumption: smoker or non-smoker for less than 1 year, excessive alcohol consumption (>20 grams of alcohol per day, assessed using the following formula: [8 x % alcohol x volume (cL))/100]); 5) Failure to comply with a standardised training or testing process during the screening phase, or formal cross-training experience in another programme; 6) Participation in a national or international swimming competition within 2 weeks prior to inclusion in the study (to avoid short-term fluctuations in training load).
