Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Inclusion criteria for schools: (1) the headmaster agreed to the randomisation and research protocol of the study; (2) the school had more than 50 students in the third grade. Inclusion criteria for classes: 4 classes were selected if the class size was greater than or equal to 50 students. If the class size was less than 50 students, 5-6 classes were selected. Inclusion criteria for students: students and their parents agreed to participate in the study and signed an informed consent form.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Exclusion criteria for schools: (1) the school has implemented or plans to implement an obesity prevention intervention programme or other similar programmes; (2) the school has a clear plan to relocate or withdraw in the next two years; and (3) special schools, including boarding schools, special schools, or ethnic minority schools. There were no exclusion criteria for classes. Exclusion criteria for students: (1) history of heart disease, diabetes mellitus, tuberculosis, asthma, hepatitis, nephritis; (2) obesity caused by endocrine diseases or side effects of medication; (3) dwarfism or gigantism; (4) physical deformities, such as severe scoliosis, augmentation of the abdomen, claudication, pronounced O-shaped or X-shaped legs; (5) inability to participate in school physical activities; (6) weight loss due to vomiting or medication in the past 3 months.
