Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Case group:1) critically ill patients between the ages of 18-90 years admitted to the ICU who meet criteria for sepsis or septic shock; and 2) patients undergoing mechanical ventilation (invasive or non-invasive) for hypoxic respiratory failure, who also meet diagnostic criteria for ARDS. Twenty healthy people were matched according to age and sex as healthy control groups.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1) Near-death status or death within 48 hours of enrolment; 2) pregnant and puerperal patients; 3) immunologically abnormal patients; and 4) presence of chronic respiratory failure.
