Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients with primary rectal cancer diagnosed as having a tumour =5 cm from the anus undergoing ISR or Miles surgery

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Distant metastases, open surgery, palliative surgery with preoperative combination of distant metastases, surgery with preoperative combination of acute intestinal obstruction or intestinal perforation, and other types of anastomosis-free surgery, including Hartmann's procedure and transanal local excision.
