Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1.a. age 50 years or older; 2.b. scheduled for elective open hepatectomy; 3.c. with expected length of surgical procedure 3 hours or more; 4.d. agree to provide informed consent;

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1.a. American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status IV-V; 2.b. BMI=30 kg/m2; 3.c. obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome; 4.d. respiratory tract infections in the previous 30 days; 5.e. contraindications to epidural anesthesia; 6.f. history of thoracic surgery or spontaneous pneumothorax; 7.g. failure to cooperate with the breathing exercise; 8.h. pregnant;
