Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. for healthy testees, the inclusion criteria are: a) no severe periodontal pocket (= 4 mm) detected while bleed-on-probe sites less than 10%; b) with no systematic pathology, and aged between 18 and 60 years. 2. for periodontal patients, the inclusion criteria are: a) having 20 or more teeth; b) with periodontitis at stage II~IV; c) not a smoker; d) with no systematic pathology, and aged between 18 and 60 years.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. for healthy testees, the exclusion criteria are: a) significant clinical attachment loss (=3mm) detected by radiographic records or clinical examination; b) currently receiving or have ever received treatment that could affect their immune status in the last 6 months; c) currently using or have ever used antibiotics in the last 6 months; d) for women, not being pregnant. 2. for periodontal patients, the exclusion criteria are: a) periodontal treatment performed in the last 6 months; b) currently receiving or have ever received treatment that could affect their immune status in the last 6 months; c) currently using or have ever used antibiotics in the last 6 months; d) for women, not being pregnant; e) subjective rejection to periodontal nonsurgical treatments.
