Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: The inclusion criteria for adult sepsis were: 1) Age: > 18 years old; 2) Meet the diagnostic criteria of sepsis 3.0; 3) There are clear sites of infection: such as lungs, abdominal cavity, urinary system. The inclusion criteria for sepsis in children were: 1) Age: 0-18 years old; 2) Meet the diagnostic criteria of sepsis 2.0; 3) There are clear sites of infection: such as lungs, abdominal cavity, urinary system. The adult ICU control group included critically ill patients admitted to the ICU without sepsis or bacteremia. Healthy adult controls, matched approximately by age and gender, were recruited from the Medical Examination Center of the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University. Non-septic children in critical condition within the PICU served as pediatric ICU controls. Healthy pediatric controls, matched approximately by age and sex, were recruited from the Medical Examination Center of the Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: The exclusion criteria for all adults were: 1) pregnancy; 2) Bone marrow or solid organ transplantation, splenectomy, radiotherapy and chemotherapy; 3) tumor, HIV infection, autoimmune disease, receiving excessive doses of immunomodulatory drugs (including prednisone or steroid equivalent, chemotherapy or biological immunomodulatory agents); 4) The source of infection is assessed as "mixed" infection or unknown source. Exclusion criteria for all children included :(1) a history of malignancy, a history of organ transplantation, a history of ongoing chemotherapy, or a diagnosis of genetic immunodeficiency.
