Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: Inclusion criteria for depression were: meeting the DMS-5 diagnostic criteria for depression; BDI-II scale score greater than 14; HDRS score greater than 7. Inclusion criteria for remitted depressed individuals were: participants who had experienced a depressive episode in the past and had been completely recovered for at least the last 3 months were included in the remitted major depressive disorder group; the diagnosis was confirmed by structured clinical interviews based on the DSM-V.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: Exclusion criteria for depressed individuals were: psychotic disorder, organic brain disease, high risk of self-harm or suicide, current substance abusers, those receiving other psychological or pharmacological treatment, and scores of 45 and above on the Beck Anxiety Inventory-Chinese Version (excluding anxiety co-morbidities). Exclusion criteria for remitted depressed individuals were: individuals meeting criteria for a major depressive episode in partial remission, an ongoing or past manic/hypomanic episode, dysthymic disorder, psychotic symptoms and scores of 45 and above on the Beck Anxiety Inventory-Chinese Version (excluding anxiety co-morbidities).
