Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. patients undergoing median sternal split cardiac surgery 2.Age= 18 years, 3. BMI 18-30 kg/m^2, 4. ASA class II or III.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: emergency surgery, preoperative ventilator use, history of acute lung injury; acute respiratory distress syndrome or respiratory failure; critical illness, including severe hepatic dysfunction (hepatic failure or Child-Pugh score B or C); renal failure (SCr>177 µmol/l-1)); heart failure (New York Heart Association class > 2); previous lung surgery; uncontrolled asthma; forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) < 60% or contraindications for use of Local anesthetics.
