Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Major Depressive Disorder Group Inclusion Criteria: a. Diagnosed as MDD and at least moderate severity of depressive episodes according to DSM-5 by two professional psychiatrists (after 2 weeks of training); b. Other mental illnesses are excluded through structured interviews using the Chinese version 5.0.0 of the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I.); c. Age is 12-18 years old; d. Score of Hamilton Depression Scale-17 (HAMD-17) is =17 points; e. Signed informed consent. Bipolar Depressive Disorder Group Inclusion Criteria: a. Diagnosed as bipolar affective disorder and currently at least moderate severity of depressive episodes according to DSM-5 by two professional psychiatrists (after 2 weeks of training); b. Other mental illnesses are excluded through structured interviews using the Chinese version 5.0.0 of the M.I.N.I.; c. Age is 12-18 years old; d. Score of HAMD-17 is =17 points, and score of Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) is <6 points; e. Signed informed consent. Healthy control group Inclusion criteria: a. A concise international interview on neurological and psychiatric disorders in a structured clinical meeting in Chinese does not meet the diagnostic criteria for any mental illness; b. Age range from 12 to 18 years old; c. Subject and family members sign informed consent.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: a. Individuals with severe somatic diseases and organic brain diseases; b. Those who have had severe trauma, infection, injury, or surgery in the past 3 months; c. Those who have contraindications for PET/CT-MRI scanning; d. Those who have consumed probiotic drugs or beverages, and prebiotics regularly (= 5 times per week) in the past month; e. Those who have used antibiotics in the past 3 months; f. Those who have had severe diarrhea (= 3 times/day, and for = 3 days) or severe constipation (= 2 times/week, with difficulty in defecation) in the past 3 months; g. Those who have used any psychiatric drugs or health products in the past 2 weeks.
