Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: The inclusion criteria were (1) having core symptoms of low mood or anhedonia in the last two weeks but not fully meeting the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for MDD and (2) having a BDI-II score = 10.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: The exclusion criteria were as follows: (1) not currently receiving or on a wait list for psychotherapy for any type of mental health problem; (2) a Chinese Baker Anxiety Scale score of 45 or above at the time of enrolment (excluding anxiety comorbidity); and (3) no notable suicide risk (BDI item 9 > 1).
