Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: ? Age =18 years old; ? Patients admitted to hospital for mild to moderate acute type II respiratory failure (PaCO2 > 50mmHg with PH > 7.25) requiring respiratory support but no invasive ventilation for the time being; ?Sequential breathing support was proposed for patients undergoing invasive mechanical ventilation for acute type II respiratory failure through an autonomous breathing test. ? and ? conform to one item.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: ? Severe respiratory acidosis PH < 7.25; ?HFNC or NIV treatment contraindication: such as oral and facial trauma, nasal obstruction, oral secretions with more and poor clearance ability, hemodynamic serious instability; ?Patients with very poor near-term prognosis, greater risk of death within one week, or those undergoing hospice; ? Acute severe failure of other organ functions; ? Tracheotomy; ? Invasive ventilation without off-line extubation conditions; ? Unable to obtain informed consent.
