Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1) aged 18 or above, 2) outpatients from psychiatric outpatient clinics, who are experiencing major depressive disorder (operationalized as fulfilling the DSM-V criteria and as confirmed by the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I. 7.0.2. Chinese) (Sheehan et al., 1998; Si et al., 2009). The M.I.N.I. 7.0.2 structured clinical interview will be conducted by the researchers to verify the diagnosis upon the referrals are made to the research study. 3) Participants’ concurrent psychotrophic medications would be remained unchanged during the study.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Patients with neurodevelopmental disorders, schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders, bipolar disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, comorbid substance use disorder, personality disorders, potential risks to self and/or others, suicidal ideation/intended, neurocognitive disorders, intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, chronic illnesses, who could not read Chinese and speak in Cantonese, who did not read and write, as well as those who had previously attended structured mindfulness-based or structured compassion-based interventions.
