Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: Eligible participants were Chinese residents who: (a) were aged 18 years or above and had been clinically diagnosed with essential hypertension by a physician, (b) taking at least one type of prescribed anti-hypertensive medication, (c) with uncontrolled blood pressure level (SBP>140mmHg or DBP>90mmHg), (d) had a smartphone on which they could access the Internet and a smartphone application, (e) were able to understand Chinese/Mandarin and give their informed consent to participate in the study, and (f) were willing to provide their contact telephone number.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: Excluded were hypertensive patients who were pregnant and who had a limb movement or cognitive function disorder, and were presenting with a severe complication of hypertension, such as end-stage renal disease or cancer and/or had been involved in another hypertension-related self-care or illness management programme in the recent 6 months.
