Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. first ever-chronic ischemic stroke 2. right upper limb dysfunction 3. at least 10° of active wrist extension, at least 10° of thumb abduction/extension, and at least 10° of extension in at least 2 additional digits. These movements had to be repeated 3 times in 1 minute 4. at least 6 months post 5. single unilateral supratentorial stroke 6. the Mini-Mental State Examination above 23 7. between 18-80 years 8. maintain sitting position for at least 1 hour 9. informed consent

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. history of seizures 2. acute serious concomitant diseases 3. unable to receive acupuncture 4. treatment with benzodiazepines, baclofen, antidepressants 5. severe spasticity (modified Ashworth = 3) 6. severe depression (BDI > 29) 7. hearing and sight severe impairment 8. sensory function severe impairment
