Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: a. Patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery (e.g., gastrointestinal and gynaecological surgery) at our institution b. Age = 60 years c. Expected duration of surgery = 2 hours d. Expected length of hospital stay after surgery = 48h

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: a. Inability to provide informed consent b. Emergency surgery c.History of preoperative psychosis/dementia/seizures d. Severe visual/auditory/smell impairment e. Allergy to essential oils f.Preoperative cognitive function screened using MMSE (MMSE <24 for secondary education, <20 for primary education, and <17 for illiterate education).
