Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Community-dwelling older adults with sarcopenia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The diagnostic criteria of sarcopenia are based on the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS): skeletal muscle index (SMI) lower than 7.0 kg/m2, handgrip lower than 28 kg, gait speed less than 1.0m/s in men; SMI lower than 5.7 kg/m2, handgrip lower than 18 kg, gait speed less than 1.0m/s in women. The diagnostic criteria of MCI are based on Petersen’s definitions: 1) memory problems (either self-reported or reported by family members or caregivers); 2) had objective cognitive impairment, as assessed through the mini-mental state examination (MMSE), 3) normal general cognitive function; 4) intact or only mildly impaired daily living ability; and 5) absence of dementia, as evaluated by the Chinese version of Dementia Rating Scale (CDRS).

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1) inability to perform the handgrip strength test or the gait speed test; 2) unable to stand for measurement of body composition; 3) unable to communicate with the study staff or provide informed consent; 4) had a severe hearing impairment or blindness; 5) had a known diagnosis of dementia; 6) had communicable disease; 7) had severe heart, liver, brain, kidney diseases.
