Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Candidates who met both the diagnosis criteria and the following inclusion criteria were recruited: (I) absence of facial nerve function recovery for more than 12 months, with or without synkinesis; (II) aged between 18 to 70 years, of any gender; (III) willing to undergo acupuncture treatment.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: The main exclusion criteria encompassed: (I) congenital palsy; (II) facial paralysis secondary to other diseases or conditions (e.g., brain tumor, stroke, demyelination, infectious polyradiculoneuritis, Lyme disease, parotitis or parotid tumor, otitis media, and autoimmune/inflammatory processes such as sarcoidosis, amyloidosis); (III) iatrogenic (trauma or prior intervention) palsy; (IV) severe comorbidity of cardiovascular or hematopoietic systems or poor liver or kidney function, or mental disorder; (V) pregnancy or lactation in women.
