Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: ? Age: 29 days to 18 years old; ? All enrolled children met the modified version of World Health Organization (WHO) classification criteria for bacterial meningitis surveillance cases or the criteria for suspected encephalitis cases

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: ? cases of autoimmune encephalitis; ? tumors with central nervous system involvement; ? cases with bloody cerebrospinal fluid; ? the volume of cerebrospinal fluid was less than 1ml; ? Children refused to be enrolled for various reasons.
