Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: (1) Age within 18–50 years; (2) At least one episode of significant ankle sprain sustained no less than 12 months before recruitment; (3) Existing residual symptoms including recurrent ankle sprains, and/or at least two episodes of sprains and/or perceived ankle instability in the previous 6 months; (4) Cumberland ankle instability tool (CAIT) scores of less than 24; (5) A pain NRS score of at least one point at the ankle joint; and (6) Negative radiographic evidence of lateral ligament insufficiency, to rule out mechanical instability.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: (1) a history of fracture requiring realignment or musculoskeletal surgery in either lower limb; (2) osteoarthritis in either lower limb, head trauma, inner ear disease, muscular dystrophy, or other conditions that could affect balance control; (3) a history of acute injury to the lower limb within 3 months before enrollment; and (4) previous corticosteroid injection at the injured ankle within 3 months, or contradictions to injections.
