Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Age >= 18 years old; 2. Diagnosed with moderate or severe ARDS according to the 2012 Berlin definition and received invasive mechanical ventilation.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Absence of informed consent; 2. Prior medical history of lung malignancy, pneumonectomy, and lung transplantation; 3. Presence of pneumatic injuries including pneumothorax, subcutaneous and mediastinal emphysema, closed chest drainage tube, and ventilator monitoring with air leak; 4. Presence of contraindications to EIT monitoring, such as implanted pacemakers; 5. Hemodynamic instability, e.g. increase in vasoactive drugs by more than 30% within 6 hours, or norepinephrine dose exceeding 0.5 mcg/kg/min (temporarily); 6. Expected duration of mechanical ventilation of fewer than 24 hours; 7. Pregnancy and lactation; 8. Need for ECMO treatment; 9. Other conditions that the clinician considers the patient unsuitable for inclusion in the study.
