Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Written informed consent signed; 2. Age over 18 years; 3. Initial diagnosis suspicious of bilateral thyroid carcinoma (either by preoperative ultrasonography and/or fine needle aspiration); 4. Planned surgery: total thyroidectomy plus bilateral central compartment neck dissection, with or without various extents of lateral neck dissection.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Preexisting hypercalcemia or any extent of renal dysfunction that impairs metabolism of calcium; 2. Abnormal preoperative PTH level or accompanied parathyroid diseases; 3. History of any form of thyroid surgery or neck dissection; 4. Postoperative pathological examination revealed other than bilateral papillary thyroid carcinoma (e.g., unilateral thyroid cancer or other subtypes of thyroid cancer should be excluded); 5. Patients receiving neck dissection less than bilateral central compartment neck dissection (e.g., unilateral central compartment neck dissection should be excluded irrespective of various co-existing lateral neck dissection).
