Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: Patients were eligible if they were aged between 18 and 65 years; had no pharyngeal disease or pain prior to tracheal intubation; were conscious or had a sedation score (RASS) of -2 to 1 and were able to cooperate, and voluntarily entered the study and signed an informed consent form.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: Exclusion criteria for the parent study were: (1) preexisting cognitive impairment or communication/language barrier, (2) use of nasal endotracheal tube during their ICU stay (i.e., only oral endotracheal tube was included), (3) current or prior tracheotomy, (4) not eating or drinking by mouth due to medical condition or surgery,(5) cannot tolerate ice, (6) unstable and life-threatening vital signs after extubation, and (7) pre-existing or co-existing other conditions affecting swallowing function, such as head and neck surgery or trauma, oropharyngeal or esophageal tumours, neuromuscular disease.
