Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Chinese residents; 2. Have a smart device and internet access; 3. Aged >=18 years; 4. Score >=16 on the Center for Epidemiological Research Depression Scale (CES-D), indicating subthreshold depression; 5. Have no suicidal ideation (indicated by a score of < 2 on question 9 on the Patient Health Questionnaire 9-item; 6. Not take any medication for depression during the last month.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Meeting the DSM-IV criteria for a major depressive episode (MDE), bipolar disorder, or psychotic disorder; 2. Current or past (in the past month) participation in psychotherapy elsewhere; 3. Using illicit substances or consuming > 3 standard drinks daily.
