Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Aged over 25 years; 2. Good compliance and good oral hygiene; 3. Diagnosed with stage III/IV periodontitis; 4. Presence of at least a hopeless molar with severe bone loss requiring extraction due to severe periodontal disease: PD > 6mm, AL >= 5mm, alveolar bone absorption exceeded 1/2 of root length or more, furcation involvement could be detected, and tooth mobility > II °; Implant restoration will be considered following extraction; 5. At least one adjacent tooth at the proximal region; 6. At least two socket walls with alveolar bone beyond the apex of the extraction socket >= 3mm.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1.Pregnancy or lactation; 2.Patients taking medications or having disease that would complicate bone healing; 3.Patients with surgical contraindications, such as uncontrolled hypertension or diabetes mellitus; 4.Patients with history of head and neck radiotherapy; 5.Smoking more than 10 cigarettes per day; 6.Absence of both adjacent teeth; 7.Teeth with ongoing acute pathology; 8.Teeth extracted due to caries, endodontic failures or fractured teeth.
