Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: TPE was diagnosed if one of the following criteria was met: caseous granuloma observed in pleural biopsy, acid-fast staining positive or Mtb culture-positive in PE, and clinical data were highly suspected of tuberculosis with an improvement of the effusion after and the anti-tuberculous therapy. Malignant pleural effusion (MPE) was considered if malignant cells were observed in the PE or pleural biopsy specimens. Parapneumonic pleural effusion (PPE) was classified as PE associated with bacterial pneumonia, lung abscess, or bronchiectasis. Miscellaneous pleural effusion referred to PE caused by other diseases.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: Exclusion criteria were as follows: patients who received anti-tuberculous or antitumor therapy before admission, those with immunosuppressive status (diabetes, HIV, hepatitis B/C, hormonal, or immunosuppressive therapy), those with intrathoracic invasive procedures or chest trauma within 3 months, those with undetermined diagnosis, or those with empyema and transudate effusion.
