Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients were diagnosed when their waist circumference >=90 cm in male subjects and >=80 cm in female subjects and at least two of the following factors were present: (1) raised concentration of triglycerides: >=150 mg/dl (1.7 mmol/l) or specific treatment for this lipid abnormality; (2) reduced concentration of HDL cholesterol: =130 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure >=85 mmHg or treatment of previously diagnosed hypertension; (4) raised fasting plasma glucose concentration >=100 mg/dl (5.6 mmol/l) or previously diagnosed type 2 diabetes.
