Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: 1. Patients undergoing elective upper abdominal surgery under general anesthesia; 2. Age 50 years or older; 3. Expected length of surgical procedure of 3 hours or more; 4. American Society of Anesthesiology physical status classification of I-III.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: 1. BMI = 30kg/m2; 2. Pregnancy; 3. Severe kidney disease (glomerular filtration rate < 50 mL /min); 4. Severe liver disease (Child-Pugh B or C); 5. History of myocardial infarction, heart failure, and respiratory failure; 6. Obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS); 7. History of spontaneous pneumothorax; 8. Neuromuscular diseases; 9. Respiratory infections within 1 month; 10. Cognitive dysfunction or failure to understand verbal instructions and cooperate with the breathing exercise 11. Contraindications of epidural block; 12. Failure to obtain informed consent.
