Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: 1. Inclusion criteria for normal controls comprised of healthy adults at age over 18 years with a normal pulmonary function. 2. Inclusion criteria for case group: continuous eligible AECOPD patients with acute hypercarbonic respiratory failure (AHRF) requiring respiratory intensive care unit (RICU) treatment.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: 1. Exclusion criteria for normal controls are previous history of neuromuscular disease, chronic respiratory issues (defined as moderate to severe restrictive or obstructive lung disease), and cardiopulmonary surgery. 2. Case group exclusion criteria: (1) Age less than 18 years old; (2) Known pregnancy, neuromuscular disease, chest wall deformity or flail chest; (3) Complicated with acute pulmonary edema and massive pleural effusion, shock or severe hemodynamic instability, immediate tracheal intubation is required, and spot tracking imaging of the hemidiaphragm cannot be obtained.
