Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients with suspected IS were recruited within 24 hours of symptom onset. All patients had a final diagnosis of IS as defined by an acute focal neurological deficit in combination with a diffusion weighted imaging–positive lesion on magnetic resonance imaging or a new lesion on a delayed CT scan.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Patients with infection (current or within 2 weeks of stroke), immunosuppressive therapy, lymphoma, leukemia, or treatment with thrombolytic therapy were excluded from study.
