Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. aged >18 years; 2. metastatic or locally advanced cancer; 3. dyspnea while sitting or lying at rest with a score of at least three points on a 0 to 10 point Numerical Rating Scale (NRS)(0=no breathlessness;10=worst possible breathlessness); 4. SpO2>=90%; 5. no cognitive impairment and able to communicate in Chinese.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. fever >38 degree C in the preceding 24 hours; 2. a hemoglobin level <=60g/L; 3. diseases or treatments affecting the trigeminal nerve; 4. allergic to aromatic oils or have a history of asthma.
