Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: This study was an open-label, parallel-group, randomized controlled trial in two main hospitals in South China. Ages of participants were between 18 to 50 years. Inclusion criteria as follows: a) BTNs were over 2mm apart from the thyroid capsule; b) Signs of compression and the BTN should be at least 3.5cm in the largest diameter; c) Twice fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) confirmed benign results (An FNAC was performed on every nodule to confirm benign pathology when multiple nodules were present); d) BTNs may compress the trachea or cause aesthetic problem.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Exclusion criteria were as follows: a) patients had undergone a thyroid ablation previously; b) open surgery was contraindicated; c) patients could not complete trial paperwork or provide informed consent.
