Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status I or II patients who were 18–65 years of age with body mass index (BMI) <30 and who were undergoing elective total thyroidectomy surgery.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: 1. Parenchymal carcinoma of the thyroid greater than 2 cm; 2. Thyroid cancer with thyroid enlargement or extension of the thyroid; 3. Preoperative throat pain, hoarseness, dysphagia, asthma, gastroesophageal reflux, impaired pharyngeal or esophageal function, or oral or Pharyngeal surgery history; 4. Inadequate language comprehension; 5. Phenylketonuria (contraindications for the sweetener aspartame in chewing gum); 6. Full mouth maxillary or lower dentures (cannot chew gum); 7. Recent use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, there was a history of upper respiratory tract infection, smoking in the past week, or steroid treatment within 2 weeks before surgery.
