Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients requiring continuous mechanical ventilation for > 48 h were invited to participate into the study

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Those who had pre-intubation pneumonia or developed pneumonia < 48 h after the start of mechanical ventilation were excluded.
