Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: The inclusion criterion for eyes with diffused DME included: 1) Aged 18-80 years old (inclusive); 2) BCVA below 40 Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) letters; 3) Central subfield macular thickness (CSMT) exceeding 300 um; 4) Poor response to treatment with intravitreal anti-VEGF therapy, with poorly responsive defined as a worsening of vision loss at least five ETDRS letters, or less than a 50 um reduction in CMST after at least three monthly injections .
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: Exclusion criteria were as follows: 1) the presence of diabetic optic atrophy; 2) the presence of proliferative diabetic retinopathy; 3) the presence of neovascular glaucoma; 4) the presence of macular traction in OCT imaging; 5) the presence of macular ischemia; 6) eyes with a history of macular grid laser photocoagulation for diffused DME, or otherwise local photocoagulation directed to microaneurysms; 7) systemic diseases, such as malignancies and inflammatory disorders, uncontrolled hypertension defined as a resting arterial blood pressure higher than 140/90 mmHg, or renal failure requiring dialysis therapy.
