Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: The inclusion criteria were patients in need of a replacement for a non-restorable mandibular molar tooth (with the root still in situ). Indications for tooth extraction included root caries, vertical/horizontal root fracture, endodontic lesion, and unsuccessful root canal treatment. Furthermore, the patient had to be willing to adhere to the protocol for immediate implant therapy.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: (1) poor oral hygiene; (2) active periodontal infections; (3) uncontrolled diabetes; (4) bruxism; (5) heavy smokers (> 15 cigarettes/day); (6) presence of a significant bone dehiscence impeding immediate placement of implants following tooth extraction; (7) a history of drugs or alcohol abuse.
