Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: The inclusion criteria were as follows: age between 35 and 70 years, the ability to understand and use the pain assessment method, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status of I–III.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: The exclusion criteria included the following: history of allergy to local anesthetics, history of opioid abuse, refusal to use patient-controlled analgesia (PCA), the need for resection of other organ(s) in addition to the rectum, history of previous abdominal surgery, and preoperative intestinal obstruction requiring emergency surgery.
