Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: The study will include adult patients (>=18 years) admitted to the ICU who undergo elective and emergency cardiac surgeries with CPB.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: The study will exclude patients who have a sustained Richmond Agitation and Sedation Scale (RASS) score -4 or -5 throughout the ICU admission (indicating coma), have no CAM-ICU assessment records, and patients who have major auditory or visual disorders or are unable to understand Chinese/Cantonese. Patients will have a detailed screening to exclude dementia, delirium (CAM) or cognitive impairment based on patients or family members reports, capacity assessments, and medical record reviews. Patients with pregnancy will be excluded too. The study is going to be conducted in Nanfang hospital affiliated to southern medical university, a teaching hospital in China. All patients will receive standardized cardiac surgical operation and perioperative care with existing protocols at Nanfang hospital, including general anesthesia and ICU care.
