intervention group:chew a stick of commercially available sorbitol-free gum at 8 AM, 12 PM, 4 PM, and 8 PM for 5 consecutive days from first postoperative morning.
control group:standard ERAS program

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: all gastric cancer patients older than 18 years receiving laparoscopy-assisted gastrectomy.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: inability to chew, conversion to open surgery or combined resection of other organs, requirement for postoperative care in the ICU or high-dependency unit.
